About me

My name is Jan Willem Kuijper,
and I am the founder of NXTsteps.eu

European roots
Being born in Leiden, I have a Dutch passport. However, as I’ve spent most of my youth in Brussels, I’d like to call myself a European with good understanding of international business across the continent and overseas.

Education
My education has been the basis for the development of my expertise, as I completed my European Baccalaureate in Brussels and completed my International Business Studies with a MSc in International Strategy and Marketing in Maastricht.
The move from Brussels to Maastricht, affirmed my ambition to develop myself academically within a European context.

From Young Professional to International Leadership

From that perspective an international career at ExxonMobil was an obvious NXTstep. This is where I gained 11 years of experience and knowledge on how to expand and lead different teams within the Esso retail service station business throughout Europe and where I was selected for the global enterprise leadership program. From the Nordics to the South of Europe, from 5 FTE to 3000 FTE, I have management experience with all team sizes and almost all countries in Europe.

The switch towards the service stations of the future

The more I got to know about the impact of CO2 emissions impacting our climate and planet and the more the number of electric vehicles rose, the more convinced I was about the need for Electric Vehicle charging stations. Despite efforts to mobilize this within ExxonMobil itself, it became clear that a career switch to the service stations of the future was needed.

Powering sustainable growth

In 2018, I started the switch towards the service stations of the future by joining the charge point manufacturer division of Alfen in Almere.

As part of the BU leadership, I successfully rolled out the international operational framework for expansion into Europe and within 18 months build a team of business implementation managers with whom I added 8 countries to the portfolio of Alfen.

From there on, I have done numerous projects for Alfen and other companies within the energy transition. Ranging from setting up CRM and ERP systems, an expansion strategy and implementation role to a partner network reaching into 22 countries in Europe. For a full overview, please reach out to me.

The successful transition from ExxonMobil towards an independent growth consultancy company wouldn’t have been possible without a clear personal mission:

With almost 20 years of international experience in the mobility business, of which the last 7 years within the EV-infrastructure and EV operations, it is and remains my mission to use my leadership and expertise of growth strategies and operational excellence to accelerate the energy transition and support leadership teams with their sustainable growth strategies.
